South Carolina State University cheerleaders and Spike, SCSU’s mascot, joined students at Rivelon Elementary School to Read for the Record. Across the nation, millions of individuals came together to celebrate literacy and to support Jumpstart in its efforts to promote early childhood education. The book for this year was Loren Long’s Otis.
Read for the Record is Jumpstart’s premiere national campaign and is presented in partnership with the Pearson Foundation. Jumpstart’s mission is to work toward the day every child in America enters kindergarten prepared to succeed.
Rivelon’s students really enjoyed their time with the cheerleaders of SCSU. The cheerleaders and Spike read to students. They also had lively book discussions about Otis as well as taught them songs and dances. The cheerleaders ended their visit by enjoying lunch in the cafeteria with students. Students are looking forward to reading for the record again next year.
Thanks to early education champions near and far, 2,462,860 children read Otis by Loren Long as part of the world's largest shared reading experience.
